Georgist Registry Annual ReportHenry George InstituteThe Henry George Institute was incorporated not for profit in 1971 in New York State. It is a democratic, membership organization. Candidates for membership sign their agreement with the Institute's statement of purpose:
In accordance with the philosophy of Henry George, the Henry George Institute holds that all persons have a right to the use of the earth and that all have a right to the fruits of their labor. To implement these rights it is proposed that the rent of land be taken by the community as public revenue, and that all taxes on labor and the fruits of labor be abolished. The Institute believes with George that "liberty means justice and justice is the natural law," and that the social and economic ills besetting the world today are the result of non-conformance to natural law. The Institute pledges itself to bring this philosophy to the attention of the public by all suitable means.
Our efforts are primarily in the realm of movement-building educational activities, particularly distance-learning courses via the Internet and regular mail. In 2008 we enrolled 92 new students and had 40 completions. Our instructors are promising graduates who have undergone a training program, and who volunteer their time. We currently have 26 active instructors. We currently have 165 members from 25 countries.
The HGI's Board of Directors has twelve members. Each year four Directors are elected by the membership, to serve three-year terms. The current Board members are Gordon Abiama,
Wyn Achenbaum, Hanno Beck, Lucia Cipolloni, George L. Collins, Mike Curtis, Ted Gwartney, Gilbert Herman, Dayton Toney Loyd, Mark A. Sullivan, Susan Walton and Arthur Yeatman. Lindy Davies, the HGI's only paid staff member, is not a member of the Board.
The Institute has long been a leader in developing and updating the Georgist curriculum used in the Henry George Schools. Our web sites offer four complete online courses, whose readings comprise an extensive library of up-to-date Georgist scholarship. We also take pride in our long tradition of working cooperatively with many other Georgist organizations; in earnest of this, our quarterly magazine The Georgist Journal, is distributed to members of the Henry George Institute, The Council of Georgist Organizations, and the International Union for Land Value Taxation and Free Trade.
